A Crash Course in Prague

Cold Water and 3 Hours...

050 / 124 · 2008-10-14

Today was interesting.

The alarm goes off on my phone at 8:45. I went to bed at a reasonable 3am. I hit the snooze. It goes off again at 8:53. I hit the snooze again. At 8:54 I sit straight up in bed realizing that I have a doctors appointment at 10am, 45 minutes to an hour away.

I go to jump in the shower, when Guy politely tells me that there’s no hot water.

Yeah. This is going to be a good morning.

I turn the knob all the way to hot, and manage to squeak out some sort of lukewarm water. I blow out of the shower, running back to the room to shiver my clothes on. In the process I manage to call for a cab, knowing that the metro isn’t going to be able to get me there in any reasonable amount of time.

After fighting with dispatch as to whether my street is in Prague 4 or Prague 14, she dispatches the cab, with arrival in 10 minutes. I eat a banana, brush my teeth, grab my book, wallet, keys, cellphone, knife, jacket, medical paperwork, the address of the medical center, and dash out the door, pausing for a moment to allow the security guard to laugh and tell me to slow down.

The driver asks me if I want to go by way of town or the tunnel. I put up my hands without contest, and say, “whatever is easier.” We went by way of the tunnel, and arrived 5 minutes of 10. Beautiful how it works out sometime.

The doctor was kind enough to tell me that if I don’t, “change my ways” I’m in for trouble later. I now have an appointment or two every week for the next 6 weeks or so to have physical therapy.

More dominatrix sessions... A joke from my ankle physical therapy for those of you who went thru that with me.

Anyways they are sending me for an MRI to see what kind of damage has actually been done... And because my insurance needs to be claimed after the fact it cost me 16,500 kc (900+ USD). Blue Cross is going to love me!

Home I went. I’m comfortable enough getting around at this point that I can actually read on the trams and metros without worrying about missing my stop. Pretty cool.

When I got home I hard boiled 3 eggs, fried 4 slices of bacon, and made two pieces of toast. Washed it all down with some tea and OJ. I timed it perfectly too. Everything finished at the exact same time. I guess Mom taught me how to cook right.

I made it to the dry cleaners with the help of Lenka today... I would have been hopelessly lost without her. I may need my suit for Moscow, so I took it in to be cleaned... We’ll see how it comes out...

I left for class at 5, picked up some of my pictures, dropped some more off, and went to the NYU center to check out the scans. I have some pretty good pics. I’ll post all of them tomorrow, but for now a teaser: the photo at the top is from Lidice.

Class was good... nothing too eventful. We did talk about the gun law in the Czech Republic. Don’t even get me started.

After class I went to a movie viewing about a Russian artist. The name of the movie was Andrei Rublev and it was shot in 1966 on B&W. And is THREE HOURS LONG. All in Russian with subtitles. I thought it was going to be a 90 minute Hollywood style movie. Not so much. But it wasn’t bad, although I’m still digesting.

Back home to watch the Sox lose, watch CSI in iTunes, and the best part of the evening, booking my flight to London.

Yes, I’m going to London to meet up with Jennifer in mid-November. More to come on that, after all I leave for Russia on Thursday!

Tomorrow should be good... Full meeting about our Russia plans, so I’ll have lots of info and pictures (from earlier trips) to post tomorrow night.

And hopefully the Sox will start to win again...
